The proposed Duke Energy Carbon Plan illustrates the difficulty of effective energy planning in an uncertain policy environment. Federal tax hikes on parts of the energy supply chain paired with new government red tape will both reduce electricity sources and raise prices for families and businesses in the Carolinas. This poses a particular challenge as we confront unprecedented and growing demand. The new industries and jobs coming to the Carolinas require energy—and they require it quickly. Solar and storage are by far the fastest resources to build in order to meet these needs.
Solar energy with storage also remains the only Carolinas energy source that keeps costs low and is obtained through a competitive market process. With low, fixed costs and immediate dispatchability, solar and storage play a critical role in slowing rate increases while maintaining grid stability. CCEBA looks forward to the Carbon Plan process, and will work to deliver lower cost, competitively-sourced electricity to ratepayers in the Carolinas.
